NIGERIA: Court stops installation of a Catholic Bishop

BENIN CITY, April 28, 2011 (CISA) – A court in Nigeria has issued a restraining order to halt the installation of Archbishop-elect Augustine Akubeze as head of the Benin City Archdiocese.

According to a local newspaper Vanguard, the Edo State High Court accepted a motion from three members of the archdiocese, who had argued that the new Archbishop of Benin City is from another tribe.  The court also restrained Bishop Augustine Akubueze from presenting himself for installation scheduled for today April 28, 2011.

They also asked the court to restrain the apostolic administrator of the Diocese Rt Rev Anthony Okonkwo Gbuji from “taking any further step to actualise Akubueze’s said wrongful appointment or installation pending the hearing of the motion on notice.”  According to the Vanguard, the three people from the Archdiocese are Pa Osakue Vincent, Mr. A. Ayemwenre and Chris Aghimien who spoke on behalf of the Edo Liturgical Group of the Catholic Archdiocese of Benin. They have insisted that one of the Benin priest should be installed Bishop as a result.
